Morocco has mountain bikers’ rocky trails, high mountain passes, desert tracks, and peaceful valleys. Time to ride can come in handy, yes; but the right time has a clear impact. Weather will dictate trail conditions, your comfort levels, and what parts of the country you can traverse.
Fortunately, Morocco allows riding for a substantial portion of the year. When is the best season for you depends also on your trail, fitness, and adventure type. Although you can plan Morocco mountain bike tours anytime, riding when the conditions are ideal makes for memorable views.
Spring: March to May
Spring is arguably the best season of the year for mountain biking in Morocco. It is a tranquil time with moderate temperatures and green valleys starting to arrive. Wildflowers might sprout on rural paths, painting the scenery.
This time of year, many opt for the Atlas Mountains. Tours close to Imlil and Ourika Valley provide a mountain tour with village visit, bits of sloping surface.
Early in the season it may still be snowy or muddy on higher trails, however. Before attempting a high-altitude ride, check your local conditions.
Great for: Scenic tours, valley trails, and multi-day bike packing,
Summer: June to August
During summer days are longer and you have sunny bright weather. Even so, mountain biking is tough in the heat, especially in places where it is often exposed and lower parts.
The altitudes of the Atlas Mountains can help give cooler conditions than the plains and desert regions. Leave early in the morning, bring abundant water, and avoid hours of maximum heat.
Summer during really hot and exposed areas does not lend itself to long rides, unless you know your route is well-planned with water, rest stops available.
Good for: High-altitude roads and early morning traffic.
Autumn: September to November
The Fall is another great time to discover Morocco by bike. The oppressive summer heat of their peak eases making long rides more civilized.
Atlas Mountains, Ouirgane Valley, and other inland areas provide good condition as well for fit beginners in addition to experienced riders. Multi-day trips across varying terrain are also a pleasant experience in this season.
Night-time temperatures can swiftly fall at those uplands. Bring a sweater, check the forecast.
Good for: Long-distance rides, mountainous trails, and upwards tours by bike.
Winter: December to February
Winter offers a different experience. While lower valleys may still be suitable for cycling, high mountain routes can turn cold, snowy, or icy.
Ride lower-elevation trails when this is the case. Please consult access and weather conditions prior to travel in remote areas.
Good for: Charming for mild-weather regions and lower hill routes.
Plan Your Moroccan Cycling Adventure
Spring and Autumn are typically the best bets for all-mountain biking in much of Morocco. Summer tends to work at higher elevations, while winter favors certain lower routes.
Pick your season based on what terrain you want to ride, prepare for fickle weather, and save time in the schedule to experience the villages and mountain vistas of Morocco. With some good planning to the destination, your biking trip will be as just about the same.
